YaaaG’s mission

YaaaG stands for Yorkshire Adult Autism self-Advocacy Group. We are an incorporated Community Interest Company (“cic”), and registered as a Social Enterprise.

Our motto is “Autism Awareness – different not less”

YaaaG cic brings together autistic adults from across York and North Yorkshire, both diagnosed and self-identifying, who want to connect together, support each other and press for our particular needs to be better understood by those in authority.

Most autistic adults do not have a learning disability.

Support by statutory services and the third sector is almost non-existent in rural North Yorkshire beyond formal diagnosis, and very sparce within York. And those seeking assessment and diagnosis face very long waiting lists.

Support for children and their parents, and those with very high support needs, particularly with learning disabilities, are more likely already covered by some existing services and support infrastructure. We will work together and in partnership with them.

YaaaG will embrace non-verbal communicators and those with sensory sensitivities; YaaaG will aim to support and empower autistic people by working directly with them and not intermediated through parents or carers.
